Best Time To Visit Tanzania

January Safari Highlights:

  • Tanzania is a great destination in January, the Northern Circuit especially – the Serengeti is outrageously good throughout January, February, and March.
  •  The first Great Migration herds have reached the Ndutu plains just south of the itself and are starting to get ready for the calving weeks in February.
  • It is at this time of year that the Serengeti becomes the finest place in Africa to view cheetah, and the sheer concentrations of predators on open plains is astonishing.
  • We use a couple of camps down here that also offer some of the finest cultural interactions and walking operations we know of in Africa.
  • Designing a holiday around the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater makes for a superb safari for January.

February Safari Highlights:

  • Exceptional big game viewing in Tanzania, escaping the heavy rains of other regions.
  • Thrilling predator action in the Southern Serengeti during the wildebeest calving season.
  • Ideal gorilla trekking conditions in East Africa during a dry spell between the long and short rains.
  • Tanzania’s Northern Circuit is a very good holiday destination in February – indeed, the Serengeti is outrageously good throughout January, February and March, with February being calving month for the Great Migration.
  • Safari aficionados flock to the Serengeti at this time of year, solely for the chance of combining their holiday with the two to three weeks when the migration is calving in full.

This is the time of year when approximately 500,000 wildebeest are born in less than a month! It is also at this time that the Serengeti becomes the finest place in Africa to view cheetah, and the sheer concentration of predators on the huge open plains is astonishing. We also use a couple of camps down in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (effectively an extension of the Serengeti), which offer in addition some of the finest cultural interactions and walking operations on the continent. A safari holiday designed around the Serengeti and Ngorongoro is superb for February.

March Safari Highlights:

  • Even though the heavy rains are on the horizon in March, game viewing in Tanzania’s Serengeti is still very good at this time of year.
  • The migration is in full swing and the newborn wildebeest calves join the migration in the Southern Serengeti.

April Safari Highlights:

Witness the peak of the Great Migration’s activity in the Serengeti despite East Africa’s unpredictable weather.

  • Southern circuit of Tanzania safari areas thrive after the passing of the rains, offering lush green landscapes and exceptional birding opportunities.

May Safari Highlights:

  • Tanzania's rainy crescendo: see their heaviest rainfall which presents a golden opportunity with low-season deals.

June Safari Highlights:

  • The transition from rainy to iconic ‘dry season’ across the country.
  • Exceptional game-viewing experiences in Tanzania’s Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Dramatic wildebeest migration in the Western Corridor of the Serengeti, particularly the Grumeti River crossings in June and July.
  • Mystical Kilimanjaro and Chimp trekking opportunities in Tanzania.
  • The south and west of the country are still not in peak season – although trips here are possible, they are not as good as they will be in a month or so.

July Safari Highlights:

  • Tanzania in July spoils you for choice. The Serengeti National Park is a huge attraction at this time of year, with the Great Migration pushing up to the northern Serengeti where the first river crossings take place.
  • The huge elephant migration is also starting to build in nearby Tarangire.
  • However, the real joy of this month is the fact that Tanzania’s quieter parks come to life.
  • Nyerere (formerly Selous), Ruaha and Katavi are the focal point of the region’s game and fabulous options for a less commercial safari than the northern parks can offer.

August Safari Highlights:

  • Tanzania in August spoils you for choice. The Serengeti National Park is a huge attraction at this time of year, with the Great Migration the main focus as river crossings take place daily in the Lamai/Kogatende northern part of the park.
  • Tarangire is the centre of the region’s elephant migration. Combining these two migrations is a popular and very good itinerary.
  • The Selous, Ruaha and Katavi are the focal point of the region’s game and fabulous options for a less commercial safari than the northern parks can offer.
  • Tanzania offers pristine Kilimanjaro trekking conditions with clear skies.

September Safari Highlights:

  • Tanzania spoils you for choice. The Serengeti National Park is a huge attraction at this time of year, with the Great Migration the main focus as river crossings take place daily in the Lamai/Kogatende northern part of the park.
  • Exceptional wildlife viewing across the continent due to high concentrations of game in many parks.
  •  Tarangire is the centre of the region’s elephant migration.
  • Experience the annual whale festival in Mafia Island offering the best opportunities to see these majestic giants.
  • Rising temperatures in the Indian Ocean as the region moves out of winter, make it a great time for beachside activities.

October Safari Highlights:

  • Exceptional wildlife viewing, with animals congregating at water sources.

  • Tanzania’s main parks are still in their peak seasons and the heat is much less extreme.
  • We are huge fans of the dry-season parks in October – specifically Ruaha and Katavi, where the lack of visitors and high volume of game makes it a fabulous and authentic safari destination.
  • In the north of the country, Tarangire’s elephant herds are at their largest, while the Serengeti sees an increase in river crossings as the herds start their journey south.
  • Rising temperatures in Tanzania's Mafia and Zanzibar regions as move towards their summer months.

November Safari Highlights:

  • Low visitor numbers for a more exclusive safari experience.
  • Discounted rates at lodges offer excellent value.
  • One must remember that light rain is to be expected during this period, but that really is no reason not to travel to the country.
  • Fantastic birding with migratory species and birds in breeding plumage.
  • Sea turtles laying eggs on Tanzania’s sandy beaches.

December Safari Highlights:

  • Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngorongoro are simply superb in December.
  • Tanzania’s light rains have a substantial effect on the movement of game in the lesser known reserves – Katavi, Ruaha and Nyerere (formerly Selous) see a dramatic shift in game volumes as herds disperse across these vast parks. The result is substantially more difficult big game-viewing.
